Five Tips for Thriving During Your First Year

|
- Read excerpts from David Kennedy’s book How to ace your way through college -- and still have a life! : 101 insider secrets to getting good grades for the non-geek. Broomfield CO: Wellness Researching Publishing
- Find a place on or off campus where you can study that no one else knows about such as a quiet corner of the library, an empty hidden-away classroom, Barnes and Noble, the Donut Bank, the Honeymoon Coffee, etc. When you need to concentrate, escape the drama of the dorms, and have absolute quiet, go to your secret place.
- Set up study groups with a few other students in each of your classes. This helps you develop networking skills and forces you to set aside time for studying for specific classes. In addition, it teaches you to work as part of a team, which you will be required to do no matter what job you get after graduation.
- Explore the Center for Career Development website for all sorts of useful information about careers, graduate schools and much more. Look especially for The Next Step: A Guide to Career Development.
-
Develop an Action Plan (download the Action Plan template) to give to your advisor BEFORE you register for Fall classes. Your advisor can help you fill it out, but here are a few tips.
- Fulfilling General Education requirements by taking classes that sound fun and interesting is a great way to explore your interests.
-
Plan during which semester you will go to Harlaxton and how those classes will help you complete General Education and minor requirements.
- Be sure you have completed your foreign language requirement BEFORE you go to Harlaxton.
- Remember that ID H282/382, which all students at Harlaxton are required to take, is worth 6 credit hours, 3 of which must apply to the International Perspective General Education category while the other 3 can be applied to any of the following categories: Creative Dimensions, Philosophical/Spiritual Dimension, or Human Behavior and Society.
- The Harlaxton College website has a listing of courses for the present and following years.
- If you are interested in doing a semester or year abroad at someplace other than Harlaxton, figure out when you would like to go and explore these programs to determine how they might help you fulfill your major and/or General Education requirements.
