Q:  Does failing to participate in extra-curricular activities really have any impact on my chances of getting a job or entering graduate school?

No but...

People who have never been in the Society for Art History and Archaeology or a fraternity/sorority have no problem getting jobs or getting into grad school. Participating in such activities is not a complete waste of time however. Besides being a good way to enhance your social life on campus, you can also make connections and network with people who may be able to help you achieve your career goals further down the road. In addition, holding a position of authority in such a group can give you some important leadership, communication, and teamwork skills you can apply after graduation.
