An MA differs little between the US and England or Europe. The PhD, however, differs a great deal. In England and Europe PhD students focus on one very narrow area of study while in the US PhD students are trained more broadly in their disciplines. When hiring PhD's for jobs, American colleges and universities want someone who can teach a broad range of subjects both inside and outside their discipline (remember the introductory survey courses you took in your discipline as well as World Cultures). Candidates for American jobs with degrees from England or Europe are, therefore, less attractive. Jobs in academia are also extremely rare in England and Europe.
