The Graduate Record Examination, Graduate Management Admission Test, Miller Analogies Test and Law School Admission Test are standardized examinations graduate schools require you to take as part of the application process. The GRE is for those intending to do advanced study in the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, the GMAT and the MAT are for those intending to enter business schools and the LSAT is for those interested in law school. Along with your GPA, your score on these exams is often the first criterion by which schools will judge your application, thus they are extremely important. After they have decided who to accept, schools also use these scores to decide to whom they will grant financial aid.

The GRE is divided into three sections.  One section tests your quantitative literacy, another your verbal ability, and the third your writing ability.  The first two sections are graded on a 1-170 scale while the third is on a 1-6 scale.
