6. A Designer's Vocabulary

White space is one of the most difficult concepts for the beginning designer to comprehend.

Comprehensive.

  • A comprehensive, or comp, is an accurate presentation of a design showing type and illustrations in position and indicating the use of color.
Figure/Ground
  • Figure/Ground (also referred to as positive and negative space) is a term used frequently when analyzing designs.
Justified and Unjustified
  • When type is set so that all the lines are of equal length, the type is said to be justified.
Legibility and Readability
  • Legibility refers to the individual letterforms and how easy it is to distinguish one character from another-regardles of size or settings. A legible typeface is therefore easy to read.
  • Readability is determined by how type is arranged on the page. It is the determining quality that makes a page inviting and easy to read.
Thumbnails
  • These are small sketches which allow the exploration of many design possibilities in a quick, efficient manner, without the distraction of details.

  • The space that surrounds type or illustrations is referred to as white space and is critical to effective design.
