The Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) exhibition was mounted in 1937 in Germany with the confiscated works of avante garde and modernist artists. In this photo we see Goebbels (Minister of Propaganda) visiting the exhibition that he helped to mount. The Van Gogh self portrait was forcibly taken from its owner, exhibited in this exhibit, and was later auctioned in Switzerland. The actions of the Nazis encouraged artists to flee to America and led to changes in the art world.
