These murals were commissioned for the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago, Illinois. benton who was a relative unknown stirred controversy when he presented a frank and honest depiction of Indiana history complete with hooded Ku Klux Klan members burning a cross. Benton declared himself an “enemy of Modernism” although he did work in a stylized fashion.
