National Gallery, London

  • This work shows a great deal of depth by using repetition of elements and atmospheric perspective.

JMW Turner, British
Rain, Steam and Speed, before 1844
National Gallery, London

  • This work also shows a great deal of depth using a foreground, middle ground and background. In this case, the effect is created by the use of atmospheric effects and the overlapping of forms.

Edward Hopper, American
Nighthawks, 1942
Art Institute of Chicago

  • Hopper gives a great sense of depth by using overlapping planes and repetition. The light also pushes forward against the dark ground.

Edward Hopper, American
Hotel Lobby, 1943
Indianapolis Museum of Art

  • In this interior space, Hopper uses the figures and the wood architectural details to define the space. There is a nice movement and rhythm around the space and an emphasis on lighting.
