THIRD SEMESTER PROJECTS Third Semester Students:
This to be a transitional semester in the painter's development, and this will be a semi-directed term with some assigned elements. The intention is to create a cohesive visual vocabulary and foster self-motivated working habits. Experimentation and an emphasis on developing a visual "style" will dominate course work.
Third semester students will be required to submit a proposal of intended work and a schedule of personal deadlines, attend weekly briefings, meet individually with the instructor once a week, and make a portfolio of all finished works. There are four thematic elements which must be incorporated into the proposed intended work. They are:
- the still life
- the human figure
- the landscape
- serial progression
After a student has met these thematic elements, the semester is open to self-directed expressions of painted imagery. Any media, scale, etc. Space will be available for third semester students in the Studio 224 (224 Frederick). This semester there will be an emphasis on the idea "transition." It may manifest itself in the choice of research topics, materials, subject, scale, etc.
Artist Report
Write a two-page paper on any 20th Century or Contemporary painter. A list of artists from which to pick will be provided. The paper should examine the work, life, and character of the artist and should be done with bibliography and appropriate citations. This research will be orally-presented to the class. Students are encouraged to take on the persona of the artist and deliver the presentation from the point-of-view of the artist.
Portfolio
We will be creating three portfolios for during the course of the semester to document our collections of paintings. Each student will create a digital, online and physical collection of work from the semester. This will be done through the use of digital cameras, some introductory computer work, and the framing of at least one of the paintings done during the semester. |
