The creation of the Gothic cathedral in Florence linked the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The architect Brunelleschi (formerly a sculptor) was able to add the crowning dome to the largest structure in the complex. It stood as a symbol of Florentine prosperity and cultural achievement.
