Christ Enthroned, Book of Kells, c. 800 CE, illuminated manuscript

Jesus is the central figure in Christian art, although many other images also have great importance. In this illustrated handwritten text, called an illuminated manuscript, the monk portrays Christ surrounded by a throne. This work was copied in the Kells Abbey in Ireland at a time when most of Western civilization had fallen into a terrible economic, political, and social decline.
