Picasso, and other 20th Century artists, were influenced by the work of African artists. Traditional Western art valued faithful natural rendering, but African art focused on bringing new understanding to a viewer. Europeans realized that they had been constrained by Western art traditions which valued the faithful reproduction of a subject.
