Day 21 Week 05
Carlo Carra, The Funeral of the Anarchist Galli, 1911, oil on canvas
The Futurists believed that change would bring a better world. They even advocated and encouraged world war because they thought that it would “cleanse” and reveal the folly of treaties which eventually would lead to World War I. This work by Carlo Carra depicts a real life event, the funeral of the anarchist Angelo Galli, where there was a violent confrontation with police. Futurist music derived its form from the sounds of progress, that is the many mechanical modes of manufacturing and transportation that appeared in the early 20th Century.
You can listen to a sample of Futurist music by Luigi Russolo here.
