Notre Dame Cathedral, Chartres, France, 1194-1260

This and other churches built in the late Middle Ages in France were all named Notre Dame (Our Lady) after Mary, Jesus’ mother. There was a strong interest in Mary at this time, sometimes referred to as the Cult of Mary. So, when looking at French Gothic cathedrals we refer to them by the name of the town.
