Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci is a work we recognize as valuable, even though it really is not that different than other portraits. The relative value of an artwork is a transient thing that is hard to quantify, but if we look at craftsmanship, the artist’s intention, the context of time period and other factors, we can see some of the reasons why one work might be considered more valuable than another.
