Art can communicate things to us even if we are not aware of them. For example, the architecture of Olmsted Hall on the University of Evansville campus is a building that was designed to symbolize permanence, strength, and the history of the modern academic institution. It does this through the architect’s choice of building material (stone) and architectural style (Gothic) that make associations that we may not realize.
