Scale refers to size, and an artist can communicate a great deal by simply changing the relative size of a work or element in a work. Van Eyck gives us a sense of the importance of the Madonna and Child by using hierarchical scale. By making the Madonna and Child enormous in relation to the cathedral, van Eyck communicates their importance to the Christian faith.
