The wildly undulating surfaces of Baroque architecture grew out of the stylistic intent of the period. Architects, like artists, wanted to create supremely interesting works to engage a viewer’s emotions and imagination. Fontana actually toned down the Baroque by bringing back some of the elements of Classical architecture, like flat surfaces.
