David Dale Owen Drawings: Arkansas I
David Dale Owen, using his home and laboratory in New Harmony, Indiana, as headquarters, was the first state geologist of three different states: Indiana, Kentucky, and Arkansas. Like other early state geologists, he assembled his findings into book form, under the generic title of Report. In his two Reports as Arkansas state geologist, Dr. Owen included original drawings. The full citation of Owen's first report follows:
David Dale Owen, First Report of a Geological Reconnoissance of the Northern Counties of Arkansas, Made During the Years 1857 and 1858, Johnson & Yerkes, State Printers, Little Rock, 1858.
Owen and a few of his works of art are described in
Wilbur D. Peat, Pioneer Painters of Indiana, Art Association of Indianapolis, Indiana, 1954.
However, Peat fails to mention any of the six Owen color drawings excerpted here from the first Arkansas report.
