Below is a list of jobs open to those with a PhD. THESE JOBS ARE NO LONGER ACTIVE, but they give you some idea of the qualifications you will need to break into different fields. These jobs are in no particular order.

BROWN UNIVERSITY – PROVIDENCE, RI (Two Positions)

POSITION ONE: Position in Near Eastern Archaeology and Art. The Artemis A.W. and Martha Sharp Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World and the Department of Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies at Brown University invite applications for a tenured or tenure-track position in the field of Near Eastern archaeology and art. Applications from scholars of any periods and geographic areas within this broad rubric, with the exception of ancient Egypt, are encouraged. Candidates with research interests in complex societies, and with active fieldwork and/or museum experience, are particularly welcome. The appointment may be made at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor.

The successful senior candidate will have an outstanding record of scholarly achievement and leadership, and a proven record of publication, outreach and service. The successful mid-career candidate will have conducted research already influential in the field, with a commensurate record of publication and scholarly activity. Junior (tenure-track) candidates must be engaged with a promising and developing research program; the Ph.D. must be in hand by August 2007. For all ranks, excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching is essential. The successful candidate will also be expected to make major contributions to the ongoing development of the newly established Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World and the recently expanded Department of Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies.

POSITION TWO: Visiting Position in Egyptian Archaeology and Art. The Department of Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies and the Artemis A.W. and Martha Sharp Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University invites applications for a visiting position in ancient Egyptian archaeology and art at the rank of assistant or associate professor for the academic year 2007-2008. Applications from scholars of any specialization within this field are encouraged, but candidates with research interests in the Archaic-Predynastic periods and ancient Egyptian material culture, as well as those with active fieldwork and/or museum experience, are particularly welcome.

The Ph.D. must be in hand by August 2007; expectations for research productivity and teaching experience will depend on the present rank of the applicant, but excellence or the promise of excellence in both are required. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to make major contributions to the ongoing development of the recently expanded Department of Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies and the newly established Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World.

SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN
PROFESSOR OF ART HISTORY

The Savannah College of Art and Design is accepting applications for full-time faculty positions for Fall 2003. The department of Art History at the Savannah College of Art and Design invites applications for faculty positions in Ancient, Medieval and Contemporary art history. The contemporary appointee will be expected to teach courses in the history of electronic art and/or new media and survey classes. UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA-CHAPEL HILL – CHAPEL HILL, NC
CLASSICS AND ARCHAEOLOGY (Three Positions)

POSITIONS 1 & 2: Two positions in Greek: The Department of Classics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for two openings in Greek prose, one a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level, the other either tenure-track at the assistant professor level, or tenured or tenure-track at the associate professor level. We are particularly interested in Greek historiography, but also invite applications from scholars working on rhetoric and oratory, philosophical prose, and the novel. For both positions, we would welcome complementary interests or skills in other areas, for example religion, law, epigraphy, sexuality, gender, cultural theory, poetry, comparative grammar. Applicants should demonstrate excellence in research and a commitment to teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels; teaching experience is preferred. The area of specialization is open, but an active program of fieldwork is desirable. We welcome particularly candidates with a developed plan of research in Roman field archaeology, who employ innovative methodologies and multidisciplinary approaches to the interpretation of cultural landscapes and the reconstruction of ancient societies. Applicants should have the Ph.D. in hand at time of application and demonstrate excellence in research and a commitment to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. RHODES COLLEGE – MEMPHIS, TN

Director, Search for Values in the Light of Western History and Religion Founded in 1848, Rhodes College is a highly selective, private, coeducational, residential, undergraduate college, located in Memphis, Tennessee. The College seeks a Director for its core three course sequence in interdisciplinary humanities, The Search for Values in Light of Western History and Religion, beginning fall 2007. In this sequence, students examine original documents from the history and literature of the Israelites, Greeks, Romans, and early Christians and trace the development of the biblical and classical heritage up to the modern period. It currently draws faculty from ten departments, and over fifty percent of students participate. The Director serves a three year term with the possibility of renewal, and s/he will be responsible for many of the duties of a department head including coordinating activities among the participating faculty. The teaching load will be four courses per year divided between the Search program and the department of disciplinary training. This appointment will include tenure in an existing department at the College. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to interdisciplinary teaching, evidence of ongoing scholarship, and a commitment to collaborative administrative leadership. The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Richmond seeks applications for a tenure track appointment to begin in fall 2007. The position is for a specialist in Mediterranean archaeology. History of Ancient Greece, Egypt, or the Near East. Assistant Professor, beginning August 2007. The Department of Classics at the University of Southern California seeks to appoint a tenure-track assistant or tenured associate professor in Latin literature and Roman cultural studies. The area of specialization is open, but the search committee will give particular consideration to candidates who demonstrate an ability to contribute to interdisciplinary research and teaching within and beyond the Department of Classics. The Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures at Texas Tech University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Classics at the level of Assistant Professor. Exceptional candidates at the Associate or Full Professor rank will be considered as funding permits. We are seeking a Latinist with a specialization in Republican or Augustan Literature and demonstrated commitment to research and publication. Teaching duties include Latin language classes as well as Mythology and Roman Civilization on the undergraduate level, and Latin Prose Composition and a Latin literature seminar (alternating years) in the MA program. The department of Classical Studies at Wellesley College announces a tenure track Assistant Professor position in material culture to begin September, 2007.

We invite applications from field archaeologists, marine or land based, doing innovative, theoretically-informed and interdisciplinary work in the material culture of Greco-Roman antiquity. We prefer someone who has connections with an on-going archeological project who could involve Wellesley students in that project. We need someone who is able and willing to teach language courses on a regular basis as part of his/her teaching load in the department. We welcome applicants whose work focuses on maritime trade or marine archeology. Completion of Ph.D. by Oct. 1, 2007 is strongly preferred.

The teaching load is two courses per term; salary and benefits are highly competitive.
