Catalogs Lilly Library rare books and special collections materials in English and other Roman alphabet languages, both copy and original cataloging. Responsibilities also include creating and/or downloading authority records with appropriate reference structures for headings new to IUCAT; retrospective cataloging for portions of the Lilly Library collections; and supervising student workers in special cataloging projects.

Qualifications: Two years college level coursework with a broad humanities background and one year library experience required. Experience working with rare books desirable. Fluency in English and reading knowledge of one European language (preferably French or German), additional languages a plus. Working knowledge of OCLC and national bibliographic and authority standards (MARC tagging) and IUCAT Workflows. Knowledge of the second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules. Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite, including Access database proficiency, MS Word, and Excel. Good interpersonal skills including the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with supervisor and peers and work cooperatively in a team environment. AREA INFORMATION: The Lincoln home, the centerpiece of the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, has been restored to its 1860s appearance, revealing Lincoln as husband, father, politician, and President-elect. It stands in the midst of a four block historic neighborhood in the state capitol of Springfield Illinois. The National Park Service is restoring the neighborhood, like the house, will appear much as Lincoln would have remembered it.




National Park Service Park Ranger: Interpretation (GS-0025-05/0)

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: As a uniformed employee of the National Park Service incumbent serves as a front-line representative working in the primary visitor contact station of Badlands National Park. Incumbent is responsible for daily visitor center operations, including conducting sales of Badlands Natural History Association (BNHA) items and providing visitors with accurate information on park resources and history, as well as safety and access information for Great Plains area. Incumbent is also responsible for presenting talks, walks, evening programs, using Power Point, and Junior Ranger Programs using prepared outlines on a scheduled basis to the visiting public. Incumbent works alone much of the time and must open and close the visitor center in accordance with posted hour and standard procedures. Incumbent operates an electronic cash register, computer, telephone, radio, and audiovisual equipment on a regular basis. Incumbent maintains records of sales and inventory and is accountable for BNHA funds and property.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to work in temperature and weather extremes ranging from extreme heat to heavy summer thunderstorms with accompanying hail. Must be able to traverse rugged terrain up to four miles per schedule without assistance. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time with only short breaks.

GS-05 requires one year of related specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level; or, a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work.

Specialized experience is experience that has demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: park guide or tour leader; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; or management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations.

Related course work or education related to the occupation includes natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

National Park Service Museum Technician, Death Valley, CA

SALARY RANGE: 28,349.00 - 36,856.00 USD per year

This position is located in the Division of Resources Management of Death Valley National Park. The duty station is at Scotty's Castle, an historic sight and house museum. The incumbent will primarily preserve and document valuable historic objects and archives within an historic district open to the public on a daily basis and work with the Museum Curator. Strong emphasis on computer ability. A valid driver's license is required to operate a government vehicle. The incumbent must successfully complete a National Agency Check (NAC) background investigation before entrance on duty; final positive adjudication of the NAC & Inquiries (NACI) required to retain position.

Death Valley National Park is a 3.4-million acre park located in the northern Mojave Desert. Temperatures in Death Valley are spring-like from late September to March/April and hot (120+) and dry in summer; it is milder at Scotty's due to its elevation at 3,000 feet. School for K-4 is located in the Cow Creek housing area, K-12 is located in Beatty, Nevada (45 miles and bus available) and school is located in Shoshone, California (60 miles and bus available). Grocery shopping and medical services are located in Pahrump, NV.(62 miles), major shopping and complete medical services are located in Las Vegas, NV (125 miles), Ridgecrest, CA (128 miles), or Bishop, CA (154 miles). Recreation includes swimming, golf, tennis, volleyball, and hiking; horseback riding, library, camping, 4-wheel drive and/or mountain biking over designated backcountry roads. Television and/or radio reception is dependent on employee-purchase or rental of individual satellite dish; there is a single NPR station available locally. All park employees are encouraged to participate in structural fire and emergency medical (EMS) activities. There is government housing available on a bid system at Cow Creek with commuter vehicle or possibly at Scotty's Castle. Housing is also available in Amargosa Valley, Beatty and Pahrump, Nevada.

Job Description

The intermittent archaeologist position will work in the Division of Forestry conducting archaeological reviews, processing and analyzing artifact assemblages, preparing site reports, and other projects as necessary or as assigned to facilitate in management of the cultural resource program on the State Forest system.

Responsibilities

Employee will be responsible for performing background reviews, conducting field reconnaissances, data entry, report editing and submissions, cleaning, cataloging, analyzing, and curating archaeological assemblages, and other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree, or working towards completion of a bachelor's degree, in anthropology with specialization in archaeology. The individual should be familiar with regional archaeology, artifact identification, archaeological methods, records research, and data recording. A knowledge of computer processing and databases is desirable. Written and verbal communication is necessary. The applicant must be self-motivated and able to prioritize and schedule projects and tasks.
