LECTURE  1: Color

Color in Painting

These are works by the French artist Pierre Bonnard. Although Bonnard is most often associated with the Impressionists, he worked well into the 20th Century. Notice how he uses color to his advantage.

Notice how the artist uses the same colors over and over. Sometimes the artist uses colors that are not there to unify the composition.

These works are by contemporary American artist Wayne Thiebaud. Thiebaud uses color that is appropriate to his scene and often uses blues for shadow color rather than black to keep a unity in his work.
