Early film borrowed clever effects from other media to enrich the art form. Film Noir was a genre of film where dramatic and lonely effects were created by controlling the lighting. Artists like Edward Hopper and Edvard Munch had already used the effects in painting and its extension into film expanded the medium into a more expressive mode.
