013-form volume mass

Day 03 Week 01

Ralph Helmick and Peter Schechter, Ghostwriter, 1994, Evanston Public Library, Illinois

Besides the total visual character of a work, form also refers to a three-dimensional shape. In this case we are looking at an implied form. It is an open volume (mostly empty space) that is made up of small pieces of cast metal suspended from the ceiling to create the image of a human head. Mass, or the solid area occupied by a work, is limited to the small metal pieces.
