Jean Francois Millet, The Gleaners, 1857

This work, done near Barbizon, France depicted the reality of the social classes. Millet paints the social reality of 19th Century France by confronting the viewer with the harshness of everyday life. At the time it was unheard of to portray the poor in a large scale work of art and the Academy and public hated this work.
