Bernini was hired by the Catholic Church to create visual forms that would encourage Protestants and those who had left the Church to return. Bernini did a large number of architectural and sculptural projects that strongly influenced the new Baroque style. The Baroque was characterized by its dramatic emotional subjects and effects.
