Alfredo Jaar, The Skoghall Konsthall, 2000, public intervention
The Chilean artist, architect, and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar engages in answering the question, “Do we really need art?” His best known works are his Interventions, in which he goes to a community and engages it in a discussion of community image. In this work Jaar visited a paper mill town in Sweden and built a museum intended to exist for only 24 hours, but once the work was in place people began to realize that this was a valuable part of their community that had been missing, and agreed to build a permanent center.
