The two virtues valued by ancient Romans were courage and strength because they were valuable to military success. The Romans came to power, and held it, because of their military efficiency. But the Romans also were very inclusive. They adopted the cultural norms of those conquered, and even invited them to become Romans. This great synthesis of cultures gave Rome its unique character.
