Artist Statement

When I create a painting, I work in a fashion that is representational, yet expressive and cartoonish. But neither dominates. Like folklore, which reflects a balance of both fact and fiction, my work relies on both realist and exaggerated visual forms. I often refer to my style of painting as “visual folklore” because of this stylistic theme.

The “fact” of realistic forms balanced against the “fiction” of stylized imagery metaphorically reflects the necessary duality of belief and proof. For example, in the painting, A Polity Played, the figure dangles and floats in front of a mass audience as if a spiritual form, but the illusion is lost for some when the figure’s humanity is revealed. The “proof” that is being balanced against the “belief” creates a contrasting duality that mimics our personal, social, and political realities and fictions.

My other works also reflect my interest in dynamic balance both metaphorical and literal.
