Course Description
Weekly individual instruction in piano. Weekly studio classes
for piano majors and interested piano minors.
Course Objectives
To develop musical and technical skills, analytical skills, musical memory,
ease and enjoyment at the keyboard, good practice habits, mental discipline,
public performance skills (stage presence and deportment), and knowledge of the
piano repertoire.
Method of Instruction
One hour or half-hour lesson per week plus weekly studio classes. Students will
be assigned repertoire at the beginning of the semester, and will work with the
instructor on fingering, interpretation, and memory. It should be noted that
student progress is contingent on daily practice in between lessons.
Course Requirements
Students are expected to show significant progress on their repertoire every
week. Issues discussed in the weekly lesson must receive thought and be
incorporated into the student’s practice.
Regular technical work as assigned is required of all
students.
Students are responsible for checking the instructor’s door and the piano
bulletin board every few days for announcements.
Piano majors must attend all department keyboard recitals and masterclasses.
Piano majors must attend all Evansville Philharmonic Concerts where there is a
piano soloist.
Students registered for two or three credit hours must perform a solo work from
memory at least once per semester in workshop recital.
Piano majors should also plan to enroll in Applied Organ for at least one
semester (as part of the minor instrument requirement or an elective) to
broaden their keyboard skills.
All music majors are required to attend student workshop recitals or seminars every week at 11:00 a.m. on Thursdays. Any exceptions (unavoidable course conflict) for the semester must be approved by the Department Chair and applied instructor. Attendance at workshop is verified by signing an alphabetized music student roster, located outside of Wheeler Concert Hall prior to the workshop. The applied major teacher will receive an attendance report at the end of the semester. Any absences without a legitimate excuse (class, illness) will have the applied grade lowered one-half grade for the semester (e.g. A- becomes a B+).
Studio class
Piano majors must attend and perform regularly in studio class. Attendance is
optional for non-piano majors. Times will be posted on Dr. Ungar's
door.
Pre-jury and Jury
All students must be fully prepared to perform in the pre-jury, as well as on
their jury at the end of each semester. Minors must have at least one work
memorized, majors at least two memorized works.
Accompanying
It is departmental policy that all piano majors (those studying for 2 or 3
credit hours) must enroll in Music 139-439 Piano Accompanying (0.5 credit hour)
each semester, except for the first semester of the freshman year. Repertoire
for piano minors (those studying for 1 credit hour) may include an accompanying
component. Students should always consult Dr. Ungar before agreeing to any
accompanying outside the accompanying class.
Grading Policy
Students will be assessed according to the following criteria:
Consistent pianistic progress as demonstrated in lessons and studio class (50%)
Workshop recital performances (piano majors) (20%)
Jury (30%)
Absences
If possible, students should let me know twenty-four hours in advance if they
must miss a lesson. In such instances, a make-up lesson will be scheduled.
Lessons missed with no prior notice or valid reason will not be rescheduled.
Valid excuses include illness and family emergency.
