Teaching Philosophy:
Erin is highly committed to musical excellence. She believes in helping students to develop creative and efficient practice strategies and techniques in order to help them uncover their own musical potential and individuality. Through individualization of instruction, Erin strives to meet student’s needs to maximize their potential and help them become independent, responsible learners. Ultimately, Erin wants the student to become a teacher unto himself or herself. Erin encourages the student to try different things and discover different approaches and techniques in horn playing. By doing this, the student is instilled with the desire to continue learning, unlocking their musical abilities.
Horn lessons consist of comprehensive studies of orchestral music, etudes and solos. Students are encouraged to participate in all large ensembles (Wind Ensemble and Orchestra) and small ensembles (Woodwind and/or Brass Ensemble, Horn Choir, and other various chamber groups). These ensembles contribute to the development of the horn player by playing along side other players, and working on the fine details of brass playing such as articulation, rhythm, intonation, balance, and all the other aspects that go along with playing as a group.
Erin feels that to be a good teacher, one must be a good performer. Through performance experiences, one learns more about music and playing. These new discoveries can then be passed on to students. Through her varied experiences as a private teacher and professional performer, Erin wishes to spark enthusiasm in her students, and help her students refine and hone their skills on the horn. Because of her love of music and the horn, Erin feels that the UE Horn Studio is a great place to learn.
