Course Objectives:
Students taking this course will
develop:
improved
playing skills such as articulation, breathing, fingering, transpositions, tone
quality, intonation and endurance.
a
deeper understanding of the horn and its history.
creative
and efficient practice strategies.
musical
sensitivity.
an
understanding of the music and the composer’s historical significance.
a
thorough knowledge of music notation and language.
a
greater awareness of melody, harmony, tempo, dynamics, form and style.
Lessons:
Lessons will be held on a weekly
basis. Lessons falling on a University
holiday (except for Thanksgiving and Spring Break) will be made up or arranged
for another day of the week.
Students registered for one credit hour
will receive a half hour lesson.
Students registered for two credit hours will receive a one hour lesson.
Based upon the student’s needs and
abilities, lessons will consist of comprehensive studies of solos, etudes and
orchestral music. Technical exercises
and scale studies may also be used to improve the student’s technique.
Practice:
Practicing is of utmost importance
for the student to grow and succeed. Students are expected to practice at least
one hour per day. Students will also
come to each lesson prepared (i.e. have all music and equipment) and be ready to play. Please warm up prior to the
lesson and be on time! Lessons
begin at the appointed time -- if late, the lost time will not be made up.
Attendance:
Students must give at least a 24 hour
notice if they must miss a lesson. If
the absence is excused, the lesson will be rescheduled at the instructor’s
earliest convenience. If proper notice
is not given, the lesson will not be made up.
The unexcused lesson will result in a grade of “F” for that lesson.
Grading:
Grades are based on the following:
weekly lesson grade – 100 points per
lesson (approximately 12-13 lessons/semester)
jury grade – 600 points
recital/concert attendance (see music
major’s handbook)
Weekly lessons will be graded on
progress and material covered from week to week, attendance, timeliness and
attention/participation.
Student Recitals and Concert Attendance:
Students are expected to perform on at
least one student workshop per semester.
Freshman are excused from playing on a student workshop their first
semester, but are encouraged to play if they feel ready.
Students are strongly encouraged to
attend EPO concerts and any other event featuring the horn. These events can count toward the required
attendance at 15 performances.
Juries:
Students are required to play a jury at
the end of the semester which serves as their playing final. Material to be performed on the jury normally
includes a solo with accompanist, etudes and/or orchestral excerpts. The duration of the jury will be ten minutes. Please watch for a jury sign-up sheet to be
posted near the end of the semester.
Students who perform full or half
recitals after the first half of the semester are excused from juries but are
excepted to continue learning new repertoire (etudes, solos and excerpts) after
the recital is over and for the remainder of the semester.
Required Equipment:
Instrument and mouthpiece
Mutes - if needed
Assigned music (student will be allowed
2 weeks to purchase music)
Metronome
Tuner
3 ring binder for lesson notes and other
horn information
Accompanists:
It is the student’s responsibility to secure
the services of a competent piano accompanist for juries and recitals. See the Music Student Handbook for the
procedure in securing an accompanist. If
a student accompanist is not assigned, names of accompanists can be suggested
by the instructor.
For Student Workshops and Juries, the
student is required to perform the solo pieces with accompanist for the
instructor a minimum of two separate times prior to the recital and/or
jury. No exceptions will be made; therefore, thorough
pre-planning is essential.
