Your final exam will be comprehensive.  It will consist of 100 multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank questions.   Be aware that this study guide is not enough to insure success on the final.  Be sure to also review notes, handouts and the text, including the sections at the end of each chapter.   Be sure to review and be able to recognize the definition of terms given in the margins and elsewhere in your chapters.

1.         What is strategic organizational communication?

2.         What is the shift occurring in the underlying assumptions and processes of strategic organizational communication? Name some organizational stakeholders.  What  are some of the environmental factors contributing to an integrated approach to communication? 

3.         What are an organization's "publics"?  What do Lawler and Galbraith say are the characteristics which put an organization at risk to become a corporate dinosaur?

4.         What is meant by systematic environmental scanning?  How do aggressive organizations use it?   What do Eisenberg and Goodall say about boundary spaners and the contributions they can make?  What environments are scanned?

5.         What is strategic management?  What does Andrew's book say about how strategy development should be conducted and what things it is attempting to match?

6.         What are the four elements of the strategic planning process (hint: SWOT).

7.         Name the two management functions which carry a major responsibility for strategic communication and implementation.  Explain each of the major activities usually included in “Public Relations”.  

8.         What are some of the ways an organization's image and reputation are maintained and/or changed? What are some of the factors which play a role in forming an organization's reputation? Can an organization actually control its public image? Can an organization have more than one image? What are the ethical implications inherent in public relations?

9.         What is issues management?  Be generally familiar with the steps of Ewing's model of issues management.

10.       What are the kind of activities engaged in by media relations specialists?  What are some of the media relations guidelines suggested by Cutlip, Center, & Broom?

11.       How did Fisher describe crisis management?  How did Stocker's research tell us about public reactions to crises?  What are the things generally included in a crisis management plan?

12.       (Not in text) How is Interpersonal Communication theory & research beginning to be used in PR?

13.       Is marketing the same as PR?  How do they differ from each other?  Explain what this statement means: "marketing is a social and managerial process."  How does marketing support company strategic planning?  How has marketing changed?  What are the "four Ps" of marketing?  What is IMC?  Why should an organization's communication be integrated (according to research by Schultz, et. al.)?

17.       Name some of the planned change practices occurring in today’s organizations.

18.       In the five-year study by Nohria, Joyce, and  Roberson, what were the four primary practices identified as necessary for sustained excellence in and organization?

19.       What are some of the major barriers to change, according to Chapter 11?

20.       What is OD? What are the necessary skills and the responsibilities of the communication professional with regard to organizational development?  HRD?  What are the necessary skills and the responsibilities of the communication professional with regard to HRD in an organization?  What are three general models of communication specialists?

21.       Name and briefly explain the four basic activities in planned development and change in an organization.  What are some common methods of data collection?  What is cost analysis and what is it used to evaluate?  What may training and development activities involve?

35.       According to Don Morley's article on "So What Are You Doing After Graduation?", what is a major problem with the organizational structure of many marketing divisions?  What does he suggest as alternatives to avoid this problem? What are some things he suggests to do if you want to enter sales (which, by the way, can be one of the highest paying jobs if you are extremely successful)?
