First, be aware that this study guide is not enough to insure success on the exam. Be sure to also review notes, any handouts and the text, including the sections at the very end of each chapter.  Be sure to review and be able to recognize the definition of terms given in the margins and elsewhere in your chapters.

 

Chapter 6

 

1.         Know the major symptoms of groupthink as discussed in class and the handout. What is the primary reason for groupthink developing?  What are some actions that can help counteract groupthink?

 

2.         How does John Baird define a group? 

 

3.         Be able to recognize 8 different types of groups (task force, etc.) based on a description of some of its characteristics.  For example, what are the three common features of a competent work team?  What are the five different types of work teams discussed in the chapter?

 

4.         What are some of the characteristics of a "team-based organization"? What is rhetorical sensitivity?

 

5.         Know the major stages of group development as presented in any videos on groups

                  and the chapter on groups. Does effectiveness of group interaction affect outcomes?    What are group norms?

             

6.            Be able to recognize which roles are task, maintenance, and self-centered.

 

7.         Be familiar with the materials on "meeting management"--how to prepare for a meeting, how to lead a meeting, how to evaluate whether a meeting was successful, etc. Be generally familiar with negative and positive group participation behaviors.

9.         Know the trait, style, situational, and transformational perspectives of leadership and

            who were the major names associated with each perspective.

 

10.       What are the major leadership styles according to White and Lippitt?

 

11.       What the major five major positions on the managerial grid of Blake and Mouton?

What are some of the characteristics of each?  For example, which is more concerned with practical solutions rather than excellent ones?

 

12.       What are the four major leadership approaches according to the situational leadership

            model of Hersey and Blanchard?  When is it advisable to use each?

 

13.             What kinds of words best describe transformational leaders? What is a SuperLeader?

What is empowerment?  What is dispersed leadership?

 

14.       How do leadership and management communication relate to each other?

According to Bennis and Nanus, what are the major strategies or competencies

that outstanding leaders possess?  What factor clearly distinguishes between leaders and managers?

 

15.             According to Velsor and Leslie, what are the major challenges that cause executives to derail?  What are some of the main leadership and management challenges in organizations today? What is a "middleless" organization? What is the Wallenda factor?

 

16.             What are some things that determine leadership effectiveness?

 

17.       What are some communication tactics for leadership and behaviors that demonstrate them? (For example:Vision-setting tactics: stating desired outcomes and visualizing abstract ideas, etc.)

 

18.       Know the different types of power bases for leaders (reward power, coercive, etc.).

 

19.       Know the three types of constructive communication behaviors for leadership.

 

20.       Review Hackman and Johnson's article on "Leadership That Transforms."
