Chapter 4

1.         What are values?  Do they affect our perceptions?  If so, in what ways?  How did  Rokeach describe value systems?

2.         How are value systems revealed in an organization?  What are thematic and tactical communication rules, stories, and myths? (See Chapter 2)  In what other things are organizational values demonstrated? How may they influence who is hired?

3.         What Did Strubler find regarding value diversity in hybrid companies?  What is high context culture?  Low context culture?  How do these concepts relate to face-saving?

4.         How does value congruence relate to employee satisfaction and turnover?

5.         What are the six orientations to personal values according to Allport, Vernon, and Lindzey?  What are some terminal values according to Rokeach?

6.         What are ethics, as it relates to organizational communication?  What are the three fundamental moral perspectives discussed by Cavanagh, Moberg, and Velasquez? What are some commonly accepted basic moral rights?  What factors would guide your decision if you followed the theory of justice when making choices?

7.         What does Arnett say about choice making?

8.         What does our text say are some improper or unethical behaviors for training and development professionals? What guidelines does Redding propose?  What are the four "habits" which Karl Wallace developed as guidelines for evaluating ethical behavior?

Chapter 5

10.       Know about the trends toward diversity in the work force and the reasons for it.

11.       Know the different theories of motivation and the major theorist for each. For example, what does Herzberg's Motivation-Hygiene theory say about improving motivation?  What does Skinner say about how we can influence behavior?   Be able to recognize each theory from a typical statement made by a worker.  (Tip: there will be several questions over these theories.)

12.       Be aware of how leadership and conflict preferences affects communication.

13.       Be familiar with some of the findings related to supervisor-subordinate communication regarding such factors as communication apprehension, job satisfaction, positivity bias (Krivonos), and type of perceived feedback (Hatfield, Huseman, and Miles).  Know the primary factor(s) involved in managing one's boss.

14.       Be familiar with the major barriers and positive approaches to combat each in valuing diversity.  (You may be asked to match the positive approach to its barrier—hint, hint)

15.       Know some of the major myths and barriers to effective listening, and some of the skills needed for active listening.

16.       Be aware of message ownership tactics and effective use of descriptive messages.
