COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1.Attendance and Participation. Because of the discussion nature of this class, it is necessary to attend class as often as possible.

    Harlaxton Campus Attendance Policy:

In courses which meet three times per week students are allowed a maximum of three unexcused absences during the course of the semester which incur no grade penalty. Additional unexcused absences will attract a grade penalty, namely the lowering of the student's final grade for each absence in excess of the permitted quota. In exceptional circumstances, students may be granted an excused, or justified, absence. Such absences, however, must receive the prior approval of the Principal or Dean of students, who will confirm the absence in writing to the faculty member concerned. More commonly, students may also receive an excused absence if, in the opinion of the College nurse, they are too ill or otherwise incapacitated to attend class. In such cases, faculty will receive a signed certificate from the nurse within 24 hours of the missed class. In the case of a student who is, without good reason, more than ten minutes late arriving for class, the faculty member may deem the offender inexcusably absent for that class period.

    Evansville Campus Attendance Policy:

Excessive absences will result in your participation grade being lowered by one letter grade. You are allowed four (4) absences maximum. Five (5) or more absences are defined as "excessive." No excused absences are given except in extreme cases. An absence is defined as "not being present in class". University activities such as field trips or participation in athletic events are not counted as absences. Inform Dr. T in advance of university related activities that will cause you to miss class.

The participation grade is based on qualitative criteria as well as quantitative: (1) Demonstration of preparation for class by doing all readings--determined by quality of information shared in class; and (2) Amount of participation--just speaking on unrelated topics and not giving others a chance to share will not be seen as fulfilling the requirement. Feel free to contact Dr. T for feedback on how you are doing on this requirement. Consistent participation is preferable to domination of the class discussions. Each student is required to give at least one presentation of 15 minutes or more as part of their optional assignment requirements. This will count toward your participation grade.

2. Examinations. Four (4) exams will be given during the semester. Each will cover all material from the assigned readings in the texts, additional handouts, and any material covered in class that was not in the readings. Each exam will cover approximately one-fourth of the class material. No make-up exams are allowed except under extraordinary circumstances in which arrangements are made with the professor in advance. Not being present for an exam will result in a zero on the exam.

3. Optional Assignments.

Harlaxton Campus Assignments: See Harlaxton Syllabus

    Evansville Campus Assignments:

From the options provided in the Optional Assignments handout, you will select any combination which will total 500 points. Either a major or minor research paper must be included in the 500 points. The required in-class presentation of 15 minutes or more will cover information from this research paper. In this way, the entire class will be able to benefit from what you have learned from researching your selected topic. Specific criteria for evaluation of each optional assignment is included in the separate Optional Assignment handout.  **Please note that both a paper copy and an electronic copy (TurnItIn.com) will be submitted for each paper in the class.
