COMM 490 (Effective Listening: Special Topics Course)

COURSE INFORMATION:

COMM 490 is reserved for special topics courses offered from time to time.  Effective Listening is one of these courses.

COURSE DESCRIPTION (UE Bulletin):

The course examines theoretical foundations and practical skills involved in effective listening. It explores topics such as listening models and theories, communication variables in the listening process, types of listening, feedback, specific techniques to improve listening skills, context influence on listener roles, and related subjects. Prerequisite: One prior COMM course.

NATURE OF THE COURSE:

This course is designed to equip you to understand listening behavior from various perspectives ranging from appreciative listening to critical listening and to recognize the important role of listening in the human communication process. Of the four basic communication skills--reading, writing, speaking and listening--the majority of our time is spent in listening. The course will present current knowledge on listening as well as opportunities to evaluate and practice your listening in order to improve your interpersonal communication.
