Course Requirements COMM 110 |
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Participation: Be prepared to participate in class discussions and speech critiques by reading all assigned materials by the date indicated in the class schedule.
2. Attendance:
Evansville Campus:
Four
(4) absences maximum. If you miss five or more classes, your final grade will
be lowered one-third of a letter grade or more
depending on how many excessive absences. Excused college functions (field
trips, athletics, etc.) do not count as absences.
Be sure to inform Dr. T in advance of such events so you are not marked absent.
Harlaxton Campus:
In courses which meet three times per week
students are allowed a maximum of three unexcused absences during the course
of the semester which incur no grade penalty. Additional unexcused absences
will attract a grade penalty, namely the
lowering of the student's final grade for each absence in excess of the
permitted quota. In exceptional circumstances, students
may be granted an excused, or justified, absence. Such absences, however, must
receive the prior approval of the
Principal or Dean of students, who will confirm the absence in writing to the
faculty member concerned. More commonly,
students may also receive an excused absence if, in the opinion of the College
nurse, they are too ill or otherwise
incapacitated to attend class. In such cases, faculty will receive a signed
certificate from the nurse within 24 hours
of the missed class. In the case of a
student who is, without good reason, more than ten minutes late arriving for class,
the faculty member may deem the offender inexcusably absent for that class
period.
3. Examinations: Three objective type tests over sections of the class material will be given. There will also be a comprehensive final. The date for each of the exams is given in the class calendar in the syllabus distributed in class.
4. Outlines: Three outlines with a list of sources used and all other information listed on each of the speech assignment sheets. Late outlines will not be accepted; no outline = no speech. Makeup of speeches missed will NOT be allowed except for extraordinary circumstances, so have your outlines ready on time. Outlines are due at the beginning of the class period on the day due.
5. Speeches:
A. Assigned Speeches: During the semester three graded speeches will be assigned. All will require outlines and advanced preparation. The class calendar notes the dates of these speeches. An assignment sheet for each speech is available on this website. It includes specific details for each speech, time range for each speech, type of speech, and items to include in the outline for that particular speech. Speakers will be randomly assigned the day on which they speak and the order of the speeches. If you must switch your selected speaking day, it is your responsibility to find someone to switch with you. Be sure to do this in advance so the new speaker can be properly prepared for their speech. Both students agreeing to the switch must come to Dr. T together before he will make the change on the master schedule. No makeup speeches allowed exempt for very extraordinary circumstances. A copy of the speech rating blank used to grade each speech is available on this website so that each speaker will be aware of the criteria on which he or she will be evaluated.
B. Impromptu Speeches: Brief speeches with no advanced will be given during the semester. These will not be graded but brief critiques, as time permits, will be given for the speaker's improvement.
C. Other
Speeches: Brief introductory speeches and speech activities to increase
speaker self confidence will be assigned during the class. These will not be
graded. The Personal Experience speech described in the assignment section of
this website will be your first speech of this type.
