OUTLINE FORMAT
Each required speech outline will observe the following
guidelines:
1. The outline will begin
with your name and method of organization for your speech.
2. Next come the title of
the speech (centered) followed by a clear, well-constructed specific purpose
statement (just use the heading “Purpose Statement”.
3. The Introduction, Preview
(optional), Body, and Conclusion comprise the major headings. These are the
only parts of the outline which will have Roman numerals before them. Each of
these sections will be in complete sentences.
4. The Introduction should
include an attention getter, introduce the subject, provide a thesis statement,
and tell why your topic is important for the audience (i.e., why listen to me).
It should be written out in complete sentences in paragraph form.
5. The Body of the speech will
be in topic outline format. That is, only the main headings (A, B, C, etc.)
have to be written out in complete sentences. The subheadings (1, 2, 3, a, b,
c, etc.) should be phrases or words rather than complete sentences.
6. The Body of the speech
will follow regular indented outline format as follows:

7. The Conclusion should
include a summary, state what you want the audience to think, believe, or do
(in case of a persuasive speech to actuate some action will be requested), and
an appropriate closing. Remember, the introduction and the conclusion will be
written out in complete sentences in paragraph form.
8. The left margin should be
used to label each of the supporting materials used in the speech such as “Example”,
“Facts”, “Statistic”, “Quotation”, “Definition”,
etc. Location where visual aids will be used should also be noted in the left
margin with a brief notation such as “visual aid”.
9. If you need any special
AV equipment not in the classroom please make a special notation at the top of
your outline so Dr. T can order it for you. Be sure to double check with Dr. T
to insure it has been ordered.
10. A complete bibliography
listing all references used in researching your speech should be attached to
the end of the outline. APA stylesheet format is required.
Bibliographies list sources by last name of authors alphabetically.
