Speech
Two: Persuasive Speech
Purpose: To influence,
reinforce, or modify the audience members’ feelings, attitudes, beliefs,
values, or behaviors. lt can
be a speech to convince or to actuate.
Length: 6-8 Minutes
Subject: You select the
subject. Remember, to do a thorough audience and subject analysis.
Special
Option :
In multiples
of two (4 students is best), you can choose to debate a controversial topic.
Dr. T. will give details.
Audience:
You will be
speaking to the members of the class. Use your audience analysis to select your
topic and organization of ideas.
Required:
(a) An
outline including title, specific purpose, organizational method, supporting
materials used in left-hand margin (just write type of evidence used), complete
topic outline with written introduction that includes a thesis statement, body
with a complete sentence only for each main heading and a written
conclusion with complete sentences.
(b) Use of at
least four reliable sources--place all sources of information in a COMPLETE
bibliography at the end of the outline. (use APA stylesheet)
(c) Audience
adaptation statement in which you discuss how you adapted the information and
organized it to persuade your listeners to change an attitude or belief. This
is to be very THOROUGH!
(d) At
least three citations given in the speech and noted in left margin of the
outline.
Criteria:
(a) Was the
speech persuasive (or was it just another speech to inform)? Did it persuade
them to change a certain belief, attitude, belief, or behavior? Was it
specific?
(b) Was there
a clear indication of why the audience needed to know about this issue and take
a stand on it?
(c) Was the
speaker’s intent clearly indicated early in the speech?
(d) Was the
introduction interesting and attention getting? Was it focused? Was the
conclusion focused? Did it clearly appeal for specific change in attitude,
belief, or action?
(e) Were
supportive materials effectively used?
(f) Was there
appropriate audience adaptation?
(g) Were
reliable sources used? (Minimum of 4)
(h) Was there
a clearly stated & narrowly defined topic?
(i) Was there
high quality content?
(j) Did the
speaker use note cards unobtrusively? (limit of 3)
(k) Was there
an appropriate development of ideas? (logical & organized)
(l) Was there
energy and conviction?
(m) If used,
were visual aids used effectively?
(n) At least
three citations given in speech.
