Speech
One: Informative Speech (with Optional Visual Aid)
Purpose: To inform the
audience on some subject; to broaden understanding
Length: 5-7 minutes.
Subject: You select subject.
Do audience and subject analysis.
Required:
(a) An
outline with specific purpose statement. (See Sample Outline Handout)
(b) Outline
must include at least three reliable sources. Include all references
used in complete bibliography at end of the outline.
(c) Outline
must include indication of overall method of organization on page one of
outline.
(d) Outline
must include indication of supporting materials used. (Place the name of the
kind of supporting materials in the left-hand margin such as
"example," "illustration," "facts,"
"quotations," "statistics," and so on.)
(e) If
optional visual aid is used, place "visual aid" in the left-hand
margin of the outline to show where it will be used.
(f) At
least three citations (i.e., telling the source of your information) are
required in the speech. Place the label "citation" in the left-hand
margin of the outline at each point you will give one.
Criteria:
(a) A clearly
stated and narrowly defined subject.
(b) Clear
indication of why your audience needs to know this information.
(c)
Interesting introduction and focused conclusion.
(d) The
quality of the content.
(e) Visual
aids used effectively (did not distract, etc.).
(f)
Originality and creativity shown in the presentation.
(g) Use of no
more than two note cards of designated size. Write only on one side of
the note cards! Do not write out your entire speech on these cards! Only
use a "key word" outline and direct quotations.
(h)
Appropriate development of ideas (organized, logical, etc.).
(i) At least
three different citations given during the speech. (For example:
"According to a New York Times article dated Jan. 6, 2009, Senator McCain
supports a balanced budget amendment." )
